My PhD research focuses on the relationship between brain structural/functional changes and olfactory dysfunction (smell loss). Smell loss, affecting up to 22.2% of the general population, disrupts daily life by affecting eating experiences, nutritional statues, and mental health. Brain reorganization in these patients is critical for unraveling the mechanisms of smell loss and serves as a foundation for diagnostics, personalized care, and therapeutic innovation.
"Understanding the brain-olfaction link is vital to improve clinical care and develop strategies that mitigate the profound daily impacts of smell loss."
My research fits into the Smell and taste changes in healthcare research line of The Nutrition & Healthcare Alliance. My supervisors are Dr. Sanne Boesveld en Dr. Paul Smeets from Wageningen University & Research and Medical doctor Wilbert Boek from Hospital Gelderse Vallei.
